Jessica is an absolute sweetheart whom I met at UH while we were enrolled in a Spanish course. Just from the interactions I had with her in class, I could tell she was going to be an amazing mother. I later found out that her husband is also in the military and I could not be more in awe of how wonderfully she has kept her family strong while he is away. I had a great time shooting her maternity photos near Diamond Head. She had an amazing pregnancy figure! Funny enough, not very long after I had finished up her maternity photos, Jessica delivered beautiful little Gemma. I was so happy to get to do her newborn photos. This little girl is definitely going places, as evidenced in her froggy moves when we were trying to set her up for photos. Watch out mommy and daddy! I definitely can't wait to see this little one grow!

I had the pleasure of second shooting a wedding at the Sheraton Waikiki with the lovely Kricia Morris of Kricia Morris Photography. The ceremony and reception were beautiful, intimate family affairs, but I also loved seeing the bride and groom interact together while their photos were taken. Julaine and Greg both looked amazing and I wish them all the happiness for their future together!

Zhalika and Ben were a pleasure to photograph. After rain threatened our first shoot, we picked up where we left off at another location. These two are naturally great in front of the camera, keeping with their affection towards each other off camera. They had me laughing throughout their session and I definitely hope to work with them again!

After a long struggle with moving domain hosts, a revamped website went up. Still simple, clean, and to the point, but with more organization! While uploading images for the site, I realized I am hungryhungryhungry to shoot like a madwoman. Unfortunately, I feel like I have zero time while I try to push through the home stretch of my last semester of school. Oh, summer, how I cannot wait for thee!

I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Cari and Russell's vow renewal at the beginning of this month at Sea Breeze on Hickam AFB. I loved everything about their ceremony because I loved everything about them. Both of them seemed so relaxed, but anxious to see one another. :) So much love was present, from bride and groom, to family and friends. I look forward to working with them in the future, and in the meantime, they will be keeping their marriage strong as Russell deploys. Thanks again for letting me be a part of your renewal ceremony, Cari and Russ!

At the end of the night, they asked if it would be alright to do a jumping shot. Are you kidding me?!? Heck yes! Bring it!

Every time December 7 rolls around, I get very excited. I know this sounds backwards, but I promise you it's not as weird as it sounds. The attack on Pearl Harbor is an event in history that is most fascinating to me and which I probably know most about. Like most when they visit, I get an indescribable feeling when I step onto the memorials, even if the number of my visits has climbed into the high double digits. I love that 69 years later, there is still a gathering to pay respects to the fallen. It is incredible to see the survivors, and even moreso to hear the stories from their lips. Unfortunately, I arrived to the USS Arizona Memorial late in the morning, after the ceremonies had taken place. I did photograph those still visiting and the newest elements of the visitor center.

Logo! What do you think? I had a problem recently with the previous logo designer redistributing the same design to others, so I finally took it into my own hands and created what you see here now. Most people aren't sure what to make of it when they look at it. But, there is a method to my madness: what looks like a letter M is actually my spin on the silhouette of a shaka hand sign. I love to throw the shaka as a sign of aloha, the love and welcome I hope to spread to my clients. :)

The daily dose of Kaua'i ends with my last sign of light on the island, the sunset at Waimea Canyon. From there we drove to the airport and returned to Oahu. Not a day goes by that I don't think about our first, amaaaazing trip there. We just cannot wait to go back. Mahalo to those of you that followed along on our daily photo adventure! After catching up on some blog admiring, I came across a post by Erin Farrell that does a fantastic job at showing the difference between know-how vs. great gear. I definitely recommend reading the whole post here, but here is an excerpt:

"Your Camera Takes Really Nice Pictures"

Imagine that you’re baking dessert for a party. It’s your special recipe: the one everyone asks for. You make it from scratch, of course, never looking at the recipe that you committed to memory so long ago. Sugar, beaten eggs, sift in the flour… you’re crafting something delicious from basic elements. Now you’re at the party and everyone is gushing about your dessert. The flavor! The texture! But most of all you’re being asked, “what kind of oven do you have? It makes great cakes!”

That’s pretty much how a photographer feels when people look at their photos and say, “your camera takes great pictures.”

Of course it’s not the camera that takes great photos, any more than it’s the oven that makes a great dessert. Ovens and cameras are just tools that make our jobs easier. Yes, better equipment does make a difference. I wouldn’t spend thousands of dollars on cameras and lenses if it didn’t. However, you must understand the camera to take advantage of all it can offer. Just because you’re using a professional camera does not mean you are producing professional images.

Just some food for thought this Wednesday morning. :)

I am making the effort to get back to my first love, film. I've been very inspired lately by looking at my old negatives and darkroom prints, as well as browsing through blogs. The unfortunate part of such a wonderful medium is how expensive it can get, so it'll be a slow transition back into it on my salary of a poor college student/photog. ;)

The next few photos will be from the helicopter tour of Kaua'i my FIL and I did. Can I just say, WOW to being the heli pilot and getting aerial views of the island everyday. I know every job has its drawbacks, but what an amazing thing it must be to go up and see the changes that come from summer to winter. Jealous! Anyway, if you have the opportunity, definitely take an hour out of your day to do this. Yes, it was a bit cramped and I did have to take many shots blindly, and the window glare will show up in some of your photos, but even so... still worth it! I mean, look at this:

Na Pali coast

The Na Pali coast is accessible by only: 1) helicopter/plane, 2) boat, or 3) hiking the dangerous 11 mile (actually, 22 mile, seeing as you go back the way you came from!) Kalalau trail which involves setting up camp because you will not be hiking in the dark. So, you take your pick. ;) Either way, this beauty is untouchable.

After coming up to this forest reserve 3 times, on the last trip up there, the clouds finally moved along fast enough for me to take a clear shot of the summit of Wai'ale'ale Crater. That peak up there, folks, is the wettest spot on Earth and is home to bogs, stunted plants (because of the amount of rainfall that they receive), and many, many dragonflies.

This photo is from another extraordinary day on Kaua'i. Every single day was filled with adventure and completely awe inspiring, but there were certain experiences that were even more special than others. A lot of that had to do with the work we put into getting to those places. Spending more than a handful of hours treking through wet, knee-deep mud, crossing into a large stream several times, slipping off of wet rocks, weaving in and out of the trail... we made it pretty dang close to the wall of Wai'ale'ale Crater, where these gorgeous and pristine waterfalls cascade and meet into a large pool which then flows into the stream. This is called the Blue Hole hike and should be on your 'to-do list' if you are ready to brave some interesting terrain (keeping in mind, we only saw 2 other people on the way there the whole time we were there). To see this wall of water coming from the wettest spot on Earth is as glorious as you could imagine, but was made even better by the fact that we hiked (almost all of) the way up to it. Definitely one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Another photo from the Kalalau Trail - this stream is fed by Hanakāpīʻai Falls. The water is "so fresh and so clean, clean". Literally. The stream ends by flowing into the ocean at Hanakāpīʻai Beach, an extremely dangerous spot on the Na Pali coast (which I somehow decided to get into and then Mother Nature taught me my lesson) with a high death toll.

Probably one of my very favorite experiences on Kaua'i: the Blue Room wet cave. Easily accessible and still spectacular. It was some of the coldest water I have ever been in and I thought we might encounter creatures hanging from the ceiling (a la "The Descent") when we swam into the darkness of the back of the cave, but 110% worth it.

(Please forgive my hubby being completely washed out; all I cared about was doing what I could to make that blue, blue water show up)

This is Queen's Bath, which was conveniently located down the street from my FIL's timeshare. Sitting in a bath being fed by the ocean? Yes, please. We watched a couple sunsets here (although Princeville decided to be socked in with clouds most days).

Oh, hey there honu! No matter how many sea turtles I've seen, I still think each spotting is absolutely magical.

Finally got around to taking the trip on the elevator to the top of Aloha Tower with the hubby. It was a cloudy day and a little disappointing, so I plan on visiting again sometime at sunset. We have caught manta feeding time before at the edge of Honolulu Harbor, but it was too early in the day this time. Instead, we caught a glimpse of this really cool fish swimming along the coral with the other little guys.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice your beloved, worn-in Chucks to get THE picture.

While I was visiting back home in CA, my cousins and I hiked down to this beauty, Paradise Falls. The trail there takes you to this spot, pictured in the first photo.

Call me crazy, there was no way I was leaving with only a side view of the falls. There was a sign posted saying no swimming, as the water looked a little like it might be harboring diseased creatures. But I wanted the photo. So I braved the icky, green, mossy water (which had bees nesting in it... and if you know me, you know that this alone shows how much courage I had) to get to the other side, the best vantage point.

Let me tell you, moss is slippery. No joke. But I made it.

Shawn worked a regular day and then had to do a run on the Captain's gig later that night. Little brother and I had no other plans, so we joined him to see fireworks on the harbor. Turned out to be a really cool experience for little man on the history of Pearl Harbor, from the Captain himself. The Arizona Memorial has much more presence, integrity, and beauty at night, in its steady and strong silence.

When Jennifer contacted me about photographing her husband Michael's homecoming, I was really excited! It was the second one I've experienced and I may have been just as anxious as she was! (Unlikely, but you get my drift!) It's definitely an emotional experience, seeing families waiting for their loved ones and finally being able to shower them with affection. In today's world filled with so many different social networking sites, I have learned that some photographers are willing to share their help and some are not. From those that are willing to give someone else a shot at success, I thank you eternally. Your tips have moved me along in my photography business evolution and I continue to grow in knowledge both in my passion and in business. I recently stumbled upon book reccomendations by the husband/wife duo of Gray Photography on how to not be another business failure statistic (if you are looking for tips, definitely check out their blog). I feel like camping out beside my mailbox to wait for these books to come. Photography is a tough, competitive world. You need to have strong business tools behind you to market your skills, and I fully intend to learn that side of the biz.

If you're good at it, and you keep wanting to get better at it, and you make people like you, you'll surely set out on the right foot.

Photography makes me feel like I am alive and growing. Makes sense that it is the means for capturing the 'alive and growing' part of other people's lives as well. :)

Meet Desiree and Micah. They had me cracking up during their shoot. I hope they don't hate me for saying it, but I think they were made for kissy pictures! :) So cute. We also took their German Shephard pup Zesto to Hickam for his first time in the water, which was too funny. I think his whole coat was covered in sand by the end.

They both are adorable and you can't really mess that up in photos. :) Thanks again to them for putting up with me getting us lost in Haleiwa and for making the golf cart security at Waimea Falls come over while we finished up. December is almost over, but I had to post one more blog before 2009 ends. My resolution for 2010 is to be a better blogger. :) December has been a crazy, fun month. Shawn's dad came out for a visit and we went to watch the massive winter waves at North Shore.

Our first Christmas was really nice and we just enjoyed the entire day together. Our pup is still enjoying lounging in his new doggie bed, and our cat is getting used to the sound of himself jingling with his new bell collar. Hope you all had a happy holiday season and be on the lookout for more to come!

It's been a long while since my last post. Life has been pretty busy. Almost 2 weeks ago, I started fall semester at UHM. Keeping up with 5 classes and dealing with tuition issues that finally got solved has kept me on my toes. I also got the chance to head back to California to visit my family before school started. My mom had been planning to get married soon before this and I was upset I wouldn't get to be a part of it. Luckily, everything worked out, and she waited for my trip out there. Their wedding was a lot of fun, and definitely interesting (we all spent at least half an hour digging in the sand to find the ring the minister dropped). I toted around my mother's camera for the day.

I'm still working on older photos from around 4th of July. I know, I'm lagging!
